A Conversation with Helene Johnson & Carol Papillo, Co-founders of GOA-TTS

Author: Deirdre Murray

Recently, we enjoyed a lively conversation with Helene Johnson and Carol Papillo, Co-founders of GOA-TTS.   They expanded on why associations matter, the formation of GOA-TTS – what and why, what makes this new association unique, the impact of the pandemic “new normal” on GOA-TTS,  and more.

Associations –  Why do associations matter in the federal space?

Papillo – Associations are really important.  There is lots of collaboration in the federal space, with associations playing a critical role.  Associations provide a more structured environment for collaboration, information sharing, networking, and more.

Johnson – Associations create the space and opportunity for open communications. They offer a safe environment – one more conducive to networking, information sharing, and learning from other executives – both partners and “competimates”.

Tell us about the recent launch of GOA-TTS… What is GOA-TTS?  Why GOA-TTS?   What do you hope to accomplish?

Papillo – GOA-TTS is” Growth Owners Association – Taking Sales Seriously”  (www.goatts.org) is a 501( c)3 non-profit, launched in Sept 2021.  GOA-TTS is focused on sales growth leaders and giving them a safe environment where senior leaders can meet, interact..  …GOA-TTS puts large, mid tier and small companies all at the same table creating a great environment and opportunities for sharing information, teaming and more.

Johnson – GOA-TTS offers advantages to both large and small businesses.  In addition, members of other associations in the federal space are typically below the growth executive whereas GOA-TTS appeals to sales growth officers with focus on JVs, M&As, different teaming constructs.  Proudly, as a non-profit organization, we will establish a scholarship program focused on sales professionals.

What makes GOA-TTS unique in the federal government market?

Johnson – GOA-TTS is the newest association with a focus on members – senior sales execs – that other associations in the federal space are not.

Tell us about GOA-TTS’ portfolio of program offerings?   How will GOA-TTS expand its reach?

Papillo –  We will host quarterly membership meetings (in person or virtual) on topics of business interest, pending business opportunities, and more.  And, sponsors will have the opportunity to showcase their capabilities.   In addition to our web site (www.goatts.org), we will broaden our platform and reach with a blog, podcasts, and more.

Johnson -We will showcase an exciting line up of guest speakers tapping topics and issues of greatest interest to our members.

Does GOA-TTS’ have company sponsors?

Pandemic – Looking back on 2020 and Covid-19 and the ongoing impacts of the pandemic, how will GOA-TTS adapt to the new normal?   How will the association bring value to its members?   How can/will GOA-TTS remain relevant?

Johnson – GOA-TTS will leverage the “work remotely” pandemic experience and many lessons learned.  GOA-TTS will continue to leverage tech capabilities. VTC platforms, and more.    GOA-TTS is launching in what is the “new normal”.

How can new members of GOA-TTS get involved?

Johnson – Founding members may join our board, the “Advisory Board” or take advantage of the opportunities as a sponsor.  There are many ways to get involved and make a difference.

What are GOA-TTS membership dues/fees?

Johnson – Our fees are based upon company size, type of member – individual and company – with the annual dues ranging from $250 to $400.  We offer attractive discounts for new members.   We’re striving for a robust and diverse set of members – companies and individuals.

Key Messages/Takeaways – What key message would you two like to share?

Papillo –  Important is the ‘newness” and uniqueness of GOA-TTS!   Now is the time to get in and involved at the “founder” level.
